• Operating system – Commercial tablets run on either of three operating systems – iOS, Android, or Windows whereas Android is the most preferred operating system in ruggedized tablets as it is easy to customize and deploy.

• Weight – Rugged notebook or tablets are designed to withstand harsh environmental conditions and are tested for the military-gradeMIL-STD-810G standard. Because they have sturdier cases and are more resistant to shock, vibration, impact, and drop, they are heavier as compared to a commercial tablet.

• Availability – Commercial tablets are available for sale for 1 to 2 years or less because they keep changing the configuration often.  Rugged notebook or tablets are designed in such a way that they are not outdated and are available for more than 10 years.

• Cost – Rugged tablets are relatively expensive compared to commercial tablets.

• Customization – Military-grade tablets are often customized to meet non-standard peripheral interfaces such as Ethernet, private labelling, regulatory certifications, etc. Commercial tablets are not customized as it requires design data which is not available in them.

• Security – Rugged tablets can lockdown software configuration, detect and reset the tablet in case of a security breach like tamper detection and also can be remotely tracked. There is a feature called geofencing which can be used to constrain the usage of the tablet to a particular location. Whereas commercial tablets have accessible operating and application systems that cannot constrain personnel access or application usage. Automatics updates and configuration modification in commercial tablets at undesirable times can disrupt usage.
