Understanding Types of Ruggedized Laptops and IP Ratings

A ruggedized laptop is a portable computing device that can withstand physical damages in harsh environments and conditions. Whether you're working in the construction business, manufacturing industry, or supply chain sector, every business requires rugged devices that have resistance to strong vibrations, extreme temperatures, dusty conditions, drops, water, and other rough situations. However, there are different types of rugged devices that offer different levels of ruggedness, durability and protection under a variety of working conditions.

1. Military-Grade Devices

They are designed to survive under the most hazardous and harshest conditions. They are labelled as indestructible. A common military-grade certification used in a rugged laptop is MIL-STD-810G. This certification means the device has undergone a series of 29 tests involving a range of environmental stresses.

2. Fully Rugged Devices

Fully rugged laptops are tough and designed to work properly in any environment, be it freezing temperatures, extreme heat, water spill, moisture, sand, or rough riding. They are more durable than semi-rugged devices but less ruggedized than military-grade ones. They are perfect for industrial applications with riskier situations.

3. Semi-Rugged Devices

Semi-rugged computers can handle some of the challenging environments, but not as much as fully-rugged or military-grade devices. Semi-rugged laptops are ideal for office use by utility workers, technicians, engineers, and other professionals whose jobs involve infrequent rough conditions.

Another factor that is used by device manufacturers to measure the ruggedness of devices is the Ingress Protection (IP) Rating. There are 6 levels of IP certification, starting from 0 to 6.

IP Rating

Effective Against

0

No protection against solid objects

1

Protected against large surfaces

2

Protected against finger-sized objects

3

Protected against thick wires and objects

4

Protected against wires, screws, etc.

5

Some protection against dust and complete protection against contact

6

Complete protection against dust and contact

There is a different IP chart for water resistance in rugged devices, starting from 0 to 9.

IP Rating

Effective Against

0

Nothing

1

Protected against 10 minutes of dripping water

2

Protected against 10 minutes of dripping water when tilted 15 degrees from the normal position

3

Protected against 5 minutes of spraying water at any angle up to 60 degrees from the vertical

4

Protected against 5 minutes of splashing water

5

Protected against water spraying from a 6.3-millimeter nozzle from any direction for at least 3 minutes

6

Protected against water spraying from a 12.5-millimeter nozzle from any direction at least 3 minutes

7

Protected against water up to 1 meter of submersion for 30 minutes

8

Protected against continuous immersion in water up to depth specified by the manufacturer

9

Protected against continuous high-pressure jets of water from any direction
